Ordinance Board
"Further, by virtue of an ordinance published with the ringing of the city bell, it is forbidden that any person shall at any time behave improperly in the church or in the churchyard. The sextons, the gravediggers, the city's dog chasers as well as the bailiffs are authorized to supervise this. Therefore, everyone is hereby warned that he should be careful not to abuse the churches or the cemeteries in any way, so that he does not incur the fine that has been set. ANNO 1593".
This artefact is an ordinance or byelaw board. An ordinance is a government order that applies for everyone, i.e. a law or a rule. On this sign it describes, among other things, how misbehaviour in a church or at a churchyard could be punishable by a fine.
