Peace of Münster in Stained Glass

by Hendrik Velthoen

In 1648, the war with Spain that lasted for 80 years came to an end. In 1656, eight years later, a stained-glass window was placed in the Oude Kerk to commemorate this event. Depicted here are the Spanish King Philip IV who hands a sealed and signed document to representatives of the States General. The actions and attitude of one of them, the person who keeps his hat on, is indicative of the independence of the Dutch. In the upper part an angel blows a trumpet.

Stained glass is a form of glass art. In the Middle Ages, the windows of churches were completely or partially stained glass which was held together in lead strips. As a result, light entered the church space in all kinds of sparkling colours. The Oude Kerk had a total of 33 stained-glass windows, most of them from the 15th and 16th centuries, four from the 17th century and one from the 18th century. The windows in the Lady Chapel are the oldest, albeit in altered and greatly restored form.
