Panelling and Stucco
From 1654, the church wardens met in this room. These 'business directors' of the Oude Kerk, four distinguished Amsterdam citizens, mostly from merchant circles, were appointed by the city council. With the arrival of the first church masters, the appearance of this room became increasingly distinguished. The church wardens hung paintings by David Colijns and Emanuel Witte, which can still be seen here.
In the eighteenth century, the interior was completely renovated in 'French Style'. The wooden garlands, with shell motifs and fruit, flowers and leaves, and a 'witje' with angels on the fireplace are typical of this style. The money vault, with its impressive door, and a niche completely lined with mirrors also recall those times. Opulence showed the status of the church masters. Even gold leaf was found in the ceiling during the restoration in 2013.
