With the open hearth as the only source of heat, the warming of the spaces of the Oude Kerk could be a challenge. In the eighteenth century the use of a coal pan was a smart way to keep warm. Hot coals from the hearth were scooped into these earthenware coal pans, then transferred to a footwarmer to warm the feet and legs. This coal pan is from the Church Warden's Office.
