This engraving comes from the book that Isaac Commelin (1598–1676) wrote about the history of Amsterdam. This book was published in 1693, taken as the basis for the dating of this work. Besides being an historian, Commelin was also a bookseller and lived behind the Oude Kerk. The engraving provides a handsome representation of the little shops but the perspective is markedly skewed.
