| Biography | Snijderskapel nr. 356 Coenraet van Beuningen is often remembered as one of the most experienced diplomats of the Dutch Republic, who played an important role in the Nordic war (1655-1660) between Sweden and Denmark. As a mayor of Amsterdam, he undertook various diplomatic journeys to the Baltics, France and England. The family crest and his birth and burial years, which have been carved into his tombstone only recently in 2012, might remember van Beuningen as a respectable statesman and overshadow the active role he played in the colonization of the Dutch East Indies as a VOC stockholder. Ironically, recent conversations and rumours surrounding his later years and death seem to revoke once again the colonial aspect of his legacy. After van Beuningen resigned from his title as the burgemeester of Amsterdam in 1686, he married his neighbour, the 46-year-old Jacoba Victoria Bartoletti who had a bad reputation. The newly-weds moved into the house at Amstel 216. After the former mayor lost half a million guilders on VOC speculations and his wedlock was also not without problems, he became mentally unstable and was put under custodial care by his VOC colleagues in 1688. |
