| Biography | Hoge Koor nr. 87 Joachim Rendorp, free lord of Marquette and Meeresteyn had been director of the Suriname Society since 1758. He was from a family of Amsterdam brewers and burgemeesters. Though his brewery was an important income source, Rendorp was mainly a rentier who had a lot of time on his hands, which he spent on government and the arts. He gathered a number of sinecures, like"Meesterknaap (forester) of Holland. He was Director of the Dutch colony Suriname; Commissioner of the Audit Court of the province of Holland; member of the board of the Admiralty of Amsterdam; and (through his position in the Amsterdam vroedschap). Rendorp and his wife were art collectors. He had a large collection of paintings by his contemporaries and was a devoted patron of arts. |
