Bible
In the early 17th century a decision was made to translate the Bible into the vernacular, so that every believer could study Holy Scripture independently. The States-General commissioned the translation and also paid for these so-called Statenbijbels, or ‘States Bibles’. As a guarantee of the authenticity of these Statenbijbels, an ‘Acte van Authorisatie’ was added in the front, which had to be signed by a member of the States-General. In this case the Bible was signed by P. Everwijn in Dordrecht on 6 September 1698.
