States Bible

by Jacob Keur

In the early seventeenth century, the leaders of the Protestant church decided that the Bible had to be translated into the vernacular, so that every believer could study scripture independently. The States-General commissioned and funded the translation of these ‘States Bibles’.

As a guarantee of authenticity, States Bibles had an Acte van Authorisatie at the front. This certificate had to be signed by a member of the States-General, in this case J. Beudt. The Bible was printed by Hendrick and Jacob Keur and was rebound by J.A. Lintveld in the nineteenth century.
