Column Paintings
Twelve columns encircle the Oude Kerk’s High Choir. In the period 1510 to 1520 these columns were painted with designs in gold brocade, red and blue, so it seemed as if costly textiles were hanging against the columns. These painted decorations served as the backdropfor statues of the twelve apostles, which are no longer present. Whereas the compositions—of which two were possibly painted by Jacob Cornelisz and his studio around 1511—are still visible today, the sculptures themselves were destroyed during the Beeldenstorm in 1566, leaving traces of emptiness in its wake.
