Memorial Stone for Karel van Mander
‘people seek many
but just one is needed’
In 1936, on the 330th anniversary of his death, a memorial stone was installed near the grave of the Flemish-born Karel van Mander (1548-1606) in the Oude Kerk. Van Mander was a famous painter and poet of the early seventeenth century. His writings included the 1604 Schilder-Boeck, or The Book of Painters, which is regarded as the seminal work of art history in the Low Countries. In this book Van Mander describes the lives of Netherlandish and German artists from the fifteenth century through until his own time, placing these painters in the artistic tradition since antiquity. The sandstone memorial stone displays a coat of arms and the text by Van Mander that is quoted above.
