Commemorative Plaque for Jan Pietersz Sweelinck
The Nederlandse Organistenvereniging (Dutch Organists’ Association) unveiled this bronze commemorative plaque in honour of Jan Pietersz. Sweelinck (1562-1621) on 5 September 1931. Sweelinck ranks among the most important composers of the early modern era. Besides being a composer, he was also an organist, harpsichordist, music pedagogue and ensemble leader. Like his father, Sweelinck was the organist at the Oude Kerk, playing on predecessor to the famous Vater-Müller organ that is still to be found here. The commemorative plaque was created by silversmith George Henri Lantman (1875 – 1933).
