Tomb of Cornelis Jansz. de Haen
`Here rests the Hero who from his enemy’s ships
Seven times captured seven flags
And fired so bravely on two at the end
That one fled and the other sank before him.'
This epitaph adorns the tomb of naval hero Cornelis Jansz. de Haen. De Haen was a member of the Amsterdam Admiralty – now called the Royal Netherlands Navy – where he earned the moniker ’t Haentje (‘The Little Rooster’) for his savage pugnacity. He later sailed for the Dutch West India Company. He was killed in the service of the company in 1633, fighting pirates from Dunkirk.
