Stained glass fragments (Lysbeth Gavenkapel)

by M.E. de Angelis
by Atelier Bogtman

The stained glass windows of the Oude Kerk have undergone several restorations over the centuries, during which damaged glass panels were replaced. Despite the damages, the value of the original panels was recognized, and they were therefore carefully preserved. In the 1970s, preserved panels from the [Annunciation and Visitation window](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/4704-54) were reinstalled in the Lysbeth Gavenkapel.

## An Overview of the Restorations and Reinstallations

In the eighteenth century, M.E. de Angelis and his son restored the windows in the Mariakapel. During this process, several glass panels were replaced with new copies. The original panels were preserved.

During a subsequent restoration, carried out by J.L. Schouten between 1901 and 1907, the copies made by De Angelis were removed and partially replaced with the original panels and partially with new copies by Schouten himself.

For safety reasons, all stained glass windows of the Oude Kerk were removed during the Second World War and stored in the national shelter in Zandvoort.

In the 1960s, the windows were reinstalled by Atelier Bogtman. In the 1970s, the same studio assembled fragments from the Adoration of the Shepherds — originally created by De Angelis and later removed by Schouten — and installed them in the Lysbeth Gavenkapel.

## Stained Glass Windows in the Oude Kerk

Stained glass is a form of glass art. In the Middle Ages, church windows were fully or partially fitted with stained glass, held together by lead strips. This allowed light to enter the church in a multitude of sparkling colors. At its peak, the Oude Kerk had 25 stained glass windows, most of which date from the 16th century.
