Mourning Plaque for Jacob Baron de Petersen

Mourning plaques are made to commemorate the dead. The plaques mention name, title, family arms, and dates of birth and death. This mourning shield was made for Jacob Baron de Petersen, who died on 20 January 1780. Baron de Petersen, who came from a prosperous Danish family, accrued a personal fortune and reputation from his time as Director General of the Dutch West India Company, for which he was stationed on West Africa’s Gold Coast from 1741 to 1747.
