Announcement boards were used in churches to indicate when psalms were to be sung during the service. They had small, interchangeable number boards, so that churchgoers could sing along from their hymnbooks. These wooden boards were hung on columns in the Oude Kerk in the nineteenth century. The kink in the board ensures that it sits securely around the column. Nowadays announcement boards are often digital.
