Reopening Mirror Room
The festive reopening of the Mirror Room took place on 14 February, Valentine's Day. This date was chosen as the Mirror Room was once the office of the commissioners of marital affairs. First, there was a musical performance by Laura Rouy on the guitar. Afterwards, director Mariette Dölle gave a short introcution. Historian Mark Ponte, who is working in the Alle Amsterdamse Akten Project at the Stadsarchief, gave a talk on his research into deeds and records signed by members of all social classes at the Oude Kerk. Furthermore, conservator Ruth Jongsma provided the audience with insights from her work.
Commissioned by the Oude Kerk, extensive research into the history and condition of the eighteenth-century canvas was first carried out in 2020 by the Oude Kerk's restoration architect Ben Massop and conservators Ruth Jongsma (Bureau for Colour Research & Restoration) and Astrid van den Berg (paintings restoration). After the survey, the wallpaper was restored in public by a group of conservators under Jongsma's guidance. Visitors could follow the restoration process themselves. We also organised several meetings between the conservators and the public where explanations were given about the restoration.
