For the Lebanese, including artist Stéphanie Saadé, the corona crisis was neither the first nor the last crisis that radically turned life upside down. In this video, recorded in April, Saadé reflects on the ongoing sociopolitical unrest in her country. The pandemic only adds to existing problems. Yet in the beginning she was still optimistic: ‘Although we were less physically active, our minds were overflowing with new ideas.’ After the explosion in Beirut on 4 August that killed hundreds, injured thousands and destroyed much of the city, including Saadé’s home and studio, she decided to leave the country.
