Silence #22: Cathedral Mobile

by Gareth Davis

The restored Vater-Müller organ took center stage during 'Cathedral Mobile', a composition by Jacob Lekkerkerker, formerdirector of music and organist at the Oude Kerk. In 'Cathedral Mobile', the movement of sound through the architectural space is central. Live recorded organ sounds are processed with electronics, and converse with acoustic instruments. Sound never stands still. The title of this composition is based on the moving, spatial sculptures, Mobiles, by American artist Alexander Calder (1931-1976). After its premiere during the music festival Toulouse Les Orgues 2017, 'Cathedral Mobile' was performed in various monumental churches in the Netherlands and Europe. During this concert it could be heard again in the Oude Kerk, where the foundation of the composition was laid in 2014, just before the restoration of the Vater-Müller organ.
