Silence #48: Piano Songs

by Gennaro, Alessandra di

This edition of Silence featured Meredith Monk's famous Piano Songs. Monk based the cycle on previously composed vocal music. In the Oude Kerk, the duet was performed by the young talented pianists Gianmarco Moneti and Alessandra di Gennaro. Monk is best known as a composer of groundbreaking vocal music and her unique approach to the human voice. For more than 50 years, she has explored the voice as an instrument in its own right. Before she began composing music for the voice, Monk, as a music student, wrote short piano studies inspired by examples from famous composers such as Mompou, Satie, and Bartók. In her piano music, directness, purity, asymmetry, and above all transparency are important elements.
