De Mariakapel werd tussen 1552 en 1555 gebouwd op initiatief van de Vrouwenbroeders, een religieuze broederschap die Maria als patroonheilige vereerde. **Een katholiek hoogtepunt in de Oude Kerk** \n
De Oude Kerk werd in de loop van de eeuwen steeds uitgebreid, en dit werd grotendeels bekostigd door welgestelde Amsterdammers. Gildes, broederschappen en rijke families stichtten kapellen, altaren en rijkversierde glas-in-loodramen. Daarmee uitten zij hun devotie aan de katholieke kerk én hun maatschappelijke status. De Mariakapel is een opvallend voorbeeld van deze religieuze en sociale ambitie.\n

Bijzonder aan de Mariakapel zijn de indrukwekkende gebrandschilderde glas-in-loodramen. Deze ramen tonen scènes uit het leven van Maria, waaronder de Annunciatie, de Visitatie, de Aanbidding van de herders en het Sterfbed van Maria. Ze weerspiegelen het uitgesproken katholieke karakter dat de Oude Kerk vóór de Alteratie had.\n

One of Protestantism's main criticisms of the Catholic Church was its excess of wealth and decoration, which was often paid for with indulgences - documents one could buy to obtain remission of sins. Instead, the Protestants strove for simplicity in worship and church interiors so that one could focus exclusively on the Word of God.\n

Against this background, it is remarkable that the very richly decorated stained glass windows of the Mariakapel survived the Protestant period. While elsewhere in the Oude Kerk altars were destroyed and vault paintings painted over, these Catholic representations were preserved - a rare and valuable remnant of the city's religious heritage.\n

During the restoration that began in 1955, the vault paintings were largely restored.
