Sjostakovitsj droeg het werk op ‘aan de slachtoffers van het fascisme en de oorlog’, maar gaf het stuk ook een autobiografische lading door op verschillende in de muziek zijn muzikale handtekening te verwerken: de vier beginletters van zijn naam. Volgens ingewijden was het werk daarmee ook een verwijzing naar de totalitaire onderdrukking in zijn eigen land. In 1988 schreef Steve Reich (1936) het driedelige ‘Different trains’ voor het Kronos Quartet. De titel verwijst naar een eenvoudige, maar krachtige tegenstelling: een joodse jongen, Steve Reich, reist tussen 1939 en 1942 heen en weer tussen New York en Los Angeles en realiseert zich vele jaren later: had hij in diezelfde periode als Joodse jongen in Europa gewoond, dan had hij op andere treinen en naar andere bestemmingen gereden. In de compositie klinken klankverwijzingen naar treinen en luchtaanvallen, frases van tekst, synchroon met muzikale thema’s in het strijkkwartet.
