Aangezien de Oude Kerk de komende jaren haar eigen archief ontwikkelt tot een 'open archief', stonden twee edities van Come Closer in het teken van archiveren, en uitdagingen die je in dat proces kan tegenkomen. Come Closer was een reeks performanceprogramma's in de Oude Kerk, ontwikkeld in en rond de specifieke artistieke interventies. Kunstenaars, muzikanten, onderzoekers en bezoekers verkennen samen een onderbelicht verleden, alternatieve versies van het heden en mogelijke toekomsten. De Come Closers, samengesteld door Radna Rumping, hadden de vorm van intieme avonden, waarbij bezoekers en kunstenaars de sonische ruimte van de Oude Kerk verkennen met dans, performance en diepe luisteroefeningen.\n

Veel van het oudste gebouw van de stad is door de geschiedenis heen vastgelegd en onderzocht. De honderden grafstenen, de vaste kunstwerken en het monumentale interieur zijn goed in kaart gebracht. Maar hoe kan de recente geschiedenis van de Oude Kerk - met tijdelijke grootschalige interventies van hedendaagse kunstenaars en een programma van performances en concerten - hieraan worden toegevoegd? Tijdens de Archive Sessions gingen we dieper in op de uitdagingen rondom archiveren, met bijdragen van verschillende kunstenaars en onderzoekers die vanuit hun eigen ervaringen spraken. De programma's duurden ongeveer een uur, met de mogelijkheid om na afloop van gedachten te wisselen en de Oude Kerk te bezoeken. Deze eerste Archive Session, ‘on ephemeral gatherings’ ging niet over het archiveren van objecten, maar richtte zich op samenkomsten die tijdelijk en kortstondig zijn. De Oude Kerk is al ruim 700 jaar een plek van samenkomst, die door allerlei groepen mensen op heel verschillende manieren gebruikt is. Hoe kan het archief recht doen aan het niet-tastbare, verwijzend naar het gebruik van een plek?\n

Sprekers Megan Hoetger en Amal Alhaag – die beiden actief zijn als onderzoeker en curator – deelden hun ideeën over het archiveren van samenkomsten. Zo heeft Megan Hoetger uitgebreid onderzoek gedaan naar experimentele filmvertoningen – waarin ze niet zozeer inzoomt op de film zelf, maar eerder op de setting van de vertoning (het publiek, de locatie, de circulatie van de uitnodiging). Amal Alhaag blikte onder andere terug op haar initiatief de Side Room (Amsterdam, 2013-2016, in samenwerking met Maria Guggenbichler) – een ruimte waar informele samenkomsten en relaties centraal stonden. De plek is niet meer; hoe blijft de legacy van de Side Room levend, en hoe archiveert Amal haar eigen veelvormige praktijk?\n

Na een inleiding door Radna Rumping en Marianna van der Zwaag, vond de presentatie van Megan Hoetger plaats: “Performances of Cinema and Other Infrastructural Musings" - met onder andere een filmfragment van Kurt Kren. Vervolgens werd de film Side Room Manifesto vertoond, die de Side Room na afloop van hun bestaan online publiceerde. Maria Guggenbichler had vanuit Duitsland voor deze avond een voice message ingesproken, waarin ze terugblikte op de Side Room, en de vriendschappen en relaties die daar waren ontstaan. Amal Alhaag sloot het programma af met een serie notities en gedachten over archiveren. Hierna was er een panelgesprek, waarbij ook het publiek vragen kon stellen. Van het gehele programma is een audio opname. Na afloop kon men van gedachten wisselen met een drankje en verschillende publicaties inzien, waaronder de geprinte pamfletten van de Side Room.

As the Oude Kerk is developing its own archive into an 'open archive' in the upcoming years, two editions of Come Closer focused on archiving and challenges you may encounter in that process. Come Closer was a series of performance programs in the Oude Kerk, developed in and around the specific artistic interventions inhabiting the space. Artists, musicians, researchers and visitors together explore an underexposed past, alternative versions of the present and possible futures. The hundreds of tombstones, the permanent works of art and the monumental interior have been well mapped out. But how can the recent history of the Oude Kerk – with temporary large-scale interventions by contemporary artists and a program of performances and concerts – be added to this? During the Archive Sessions, we delved deeper into challenges surrounding archiving, with contributions from various artists and researchers speaking from their own experiences. The programs lasted about an hour, with the possibility to exchange ideas and visit de Oude Kerk afterwards. This first Archive Session 'On Ephemeral Gatherings' was not about archiving objects but focused on gatherings that are temporary and ephemeral. The Oude Kerk has been a place of gathering for over 700 years, used by all kinds of groups of people in very different ways. Speakers Megan Hoetger and Amal Alhaag - who are both active researchers and curators - shared their ideas on archiving gatherings. For instance, Megan Hoetger has done extensive research on experimental film screenings - focusing not so much on the film itself but rather on the setting of the screening (the audience, the location, the circulation of the invitation). Among other things, Amal Alhaag looked back at her initiative the Side Room (Amsterdam, 2013-2016, in collaboration with Maria Guggenbichler) - a space where informal gatherings and relationships were central. The place is no more but how does the Side Room's legacy remain alive and how does Amal archive her own multifaceted practice?\n
