Dit gebrandschilderd glas-in-lood raam toont twee belangrijke scenes uit het leven van Maria en haar zoon Jezus Christus. Op de voorgrond verzamelen herders, die in Christus hun verlosser herkenden, zich rond Maria’s pasgeboren zoon, terwijl engelen boven hen zweven. Op de achtergrond zie je de presentatie van Jezus. ## Een geschenk van de stad, aan de stad.\n

Dit raam werd door de stad Amsterdam aan de Oude Kerk geschonken. Onderin zijn de vier beschermheiligen van Amsterdam – St. Nicolaas, Johannes de Doper, Maria en de heilige Catharina – afgebeeld, naast hen groot het wapen van Amsterdam gedragen door twee leeuwen. Ook bovenin het raam zijn verschillende heraldische tekens van Amsterdam te vinden. \n

## Een raam uit verschillende eeuwen. \n
\n
Het ontwerp van het raam Aanbidding van de herders, gemaakt in 1555, wordt toegeschreven aan de architect en kunstschilder Lambert van Noort (ca. 1520-1571), terwijl de uitvoering wordt toegeschreven aan de glazenier Digman Meynaert (1543-1558). Veel van de glaspanelen in dit raam dateren echter uit latere periodes.\n

In de achttiende eeuw voerden M.E. de Angelis en zijn zoon een restauratie uit, waarbij verschillende glasplaten werden vervangen door nieuwe kopieën. De originele panelen bleven echter bewaard. Tijdens een volgende restauratie, uitgevoerd door J.L. Schouten tussen 1901 en 1907, werden de kopieën van De Angelis verwijderd en deels vervangen door de originele panelen en deels door nieuwe kopieën van Schouten zelf.\n

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden alle gebrandschilderde ramen van de Oude Kerk verwijderd en uit veiligheidsoverwegingen opgeslagen in de rijksschuilkelder in Zandvoort. In de jaren zestig werden de ramen teruggeplaatst door Atelier Bogtman. Daarnaast plaatste Atelier Bogtman in de jaren zeventig fragmenten uit Aanbidding van de herders – die oorspronkelijk door De Angelis waren vervaardigd en later door Schouten waren verwijderd – als replica’s en assemblages in de Sint-Sebastiaanskapel, de Sint-Joriskapel en Binnenlandvaarderskapel.\n

## De nieuwe Mariakapel aan de vooravond van de Alteratie \n

De Oude Kerk is grotendeels gebouwd door schenkingen van rijke Amsterdammers. Gilden, broederschappen en rijke families stichtten kapellen, altaren en rijk gedecoreerde ramen. Hiermee uitten zij devotie aan de katholieke kerk, maar het was ook een manier om macht en rijkdom uit te stralen. De Mariakapel is de laatst aangebouwde kapel van de Oude Kerk, gebouwd in de periode van de Reformatie. Aan de rijk gedecoreerde ramen proef je hier echter dat de Oude Kerk toen nog in de katholieke traditie stond, terwijl de Alteratie niet lang na de bouw van de kapel zou volgen. \n

Het is dan ook opmerkelijk dat de ramen met de [Annunciatie en Visitatie](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/4704-54), de Aanbidding van de Herders en het [Sterfbed van Maria](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/4704-52) — die samen een serie vormen — de protestantse periode van de Oude Kerk hebben doorstaan. Dit terwijl elders in de kerk altaren werden vernield en gewelfschilderingen werden overschilderd. Het vierde raam uit de serie, waarop de stamboom van Maria was afgebeeld, werd in de achttiende eeuw wel vervangen door het [Tweede Burgemeestersraam](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/000177). Tegenwoordig maakt de reeks deel uit van Collectie Nederland.\n

Brandschilderen is een vorm van glaskunst. In de Middeleeuwen werden de ramen van kerken helemaal of deels voorzien van gebrandschilderd glas wat bij elkaar gehouden werd in loden strips. Het licht viel daardoor in allerlei sprankelende kleuren de kerkruimte binnen. Op het hoogtepunt telde de Oude Kerk 25 gebrandschilderde glas-in-loodramen waarvan de meeste dateren uit de 16de eeuw.\n

## A gift from the city, to the city.\n

This window was donated to the Oude Kerk by the city of Amsterdam. At the bottom, the four patron saints of Amsterdam - St. Nicholas, John the Baptist, Mary and St. Catherine - are depicted, next to them large the coat of arms of Amsterdam carried by two lions. Also at the top of the window are various heraldic marks of Amsterdam. \n

## A window from different centuries. \n
\n
The design of the window Adoration of the Shepherds, made in 1555, is attributed to the architect and painter Lambert van Noort (c. 1520-1571), while the execution is attributed to the glazier Digman Meynaert (1543-1558). However, many of the glass panels in this window date from later periods.\n
\n
In the eighteenth century, M.E. de Angelis and his son performed a restoration, replacing several glass panels with new copies. The original panels, however, were preserved. During a subsequent restoration, performed by J.L. Schouten between 1901 and 1907, De Angelis' copies were removed and replaced partly with the original panels and partly with new copies by Schouten himself.\n

During World War II, all the stained glass windows of the Oude Kerk were removed and stored in the Reichsschuilkelder in Zandvoort for safety reasons. In the 1960s, the windows were reinstalled by Atelier Bogtman. In addition, in the 1970s, Atelier Bogtman placed fragments from Adoration of the Shepherds - originally made by De Angelis and later removed by Schouten - as replicas and assemblages in Sint-Sebastiaanskapel, Sint-Joriskapel and Binnenlandvaarderskapel.\n

## The new Maria kapel on the eve of the Alteration\n

The Oude Kerk was built largely through donations from wealthy Amsterdam residents. Guilds, fraternities and wealthy families founded chapels, altars and richly decorated windows. With these they expressed devotion to the Catholic Church, but it was also a way to exude power and wealth. The Maria kapel is the last attached chapel of the Oude Kerk, built during the period of the Reformation. From the richly decorated windows here, however, you can taste that the Oude Kerk was still in the Catholic tradition then, while the Alteration would follow not long after the chapel was built.\n

It is remarkable, then, that the windows depicting the [Annunciation and Visitation](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/4704-54), the Adoration of the Shepherds and the [Deathbed of Mary](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/4704-52) - which together form a series - survived the Oude Kerk's Protestant period. This while elsewhere in the church altars were destroyed and vault paintings were painted over. The fourth window in the series, which depicted the family tree of Mary, did get replaced by the [Second Mayor's Window](https://openarchive.oudekerk.nl/collect/000177) in the eighteenth century. Today the series is part of Collection Netherlands.\n

## Stained glass windows in the Oude Kerk\n

Stained glass is a form of glass art. In the Middle Ages, the windows of churches were all or part stained glass which was held together in lead strips. As a result, light entered the church space in all sorts of sparkling colors. At its peak, the Oude Kerk had 25 stained glass windows, most of which date from the 16th century.
